Welcome to the web site of the 2002 American Manaslu Expedition!

Our team of six Pacific Northwest climbers led by Tom Fitzsimmons departed Seattle on April 5th, 2002 en route to the Nepalese capitol of Kathmandu.  From Kathmandu we drove to the remote town of Gorkha; from there it was ten days on foot to Manaslu base camp.  We approximated the route pioneered by the Japanese in 1956.  After ascending the Manaslu Glacier to the North Col we followed the north ridge to the summit plateau.  From the edge of the plateau it was a long day to the the 26,758 foot summit of Manaslu.

We provided dispatches from the field; see our . . . Itinerary and Dispatches. On May 13th, 2002 five Americans and two Sherpa reached the summit of Manaslu!  See our dispatch from the summit.
